Apple's Ultra-Light PowerBook 2400c to Ship With Mac OS 8

To ensure that PowerBook customers get immediate access to Apple's latest system software offering, Apple announced that the PowerBook 2400c will ship in August with Mac OS 8 preinstalled on the system. This announcement, which represents a slight delay in the U.S. availability of the PowerBook 2400c, satisfies the majority of PowerBook customers, who indicated they would prefer to purchase this new notebook with the latest operating system release already installed. The PowerBook 2400c was originally scheduled to be released in the United States at the end of July with Mac OS 7.6.

The high-end PCI-based PowerBook 2400c, shipping since May in Japan, was designed by Apple with collaboration from IBM Japan as part of an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) agreement. It is currently exceeding all initial expectations in that market. The PowerBook 2400c targets mobile professionals who require a lightweight yet powerful portable computing solution.

Update on Developer World Access

While Apple Developer Relations is upgrading the U.S.-based developer program areas of the Developer World web site, Apple has removed front-end password requirements from the searching, hardware purchase, bug reporting, and seeding areas. (With the exception of the easier and more powerful site search mechanism, these changes are of interest to members of any of the Apple Developer Programs.) In the next few weeks, Apple will be working to build a new version of the Developer World site that is more comprehensive, efficient, and reliable. In the meantime, note changes to the access procedure for these areas:

By the way, if you've been successfully using a Developer World ID and password, you don't need to reregister. You can use bug reporting with your existing ID and password. If you've submitted a Developer World ID and password over the past few months, but have not received any confirmation of your status, try the ID and password you initially submitted. If you've forgotten those details, you'll need to reregister. You'll be able to use your new ID and password immediately.

As Apple's web site renovation progresses, we'll ask for your feedback to ensure that Developer World becomes the primary, most useful vehicle in your communications with Apple. Many thanks for your continued support and patience.

A Call for Mac OS Platform Success Stories

Recently, a potential customer called Bare Bones Software to find out how to get a Windows version of BBEdit, the well-known text and HTML editor. A product spokesperson told the customer that the company only develops products for the Mac OS. Not too long after, BBEdit received the following communication from the customer:

"...My company just ordered me a U.S.$ 5K Mac system to accommodate, among other things, the lack of a comparable HTML editor on the PC platform (of course, I prefer a Mac anyway!)."

This story brings up several important truths about the Mac OS marketplace: namely, that you can be successful selling Mac OS (even Mac OS-only) products; that customers will go out of their way--sometimes WAY out of their way--to purchase superior, useful products; and that customers continue to recognize the inherent superiority of the Mac OS over Windows.

If you have similar success stories on developing Mac OS products that you want to share, please send them to us at kris@newbytech.com for possible inclusion in future issues of Apple Developer News (ADN).
